A New Life with Flat Tires
Imagine buying a brand-new car. You wouldn't want to leave it in the garage with four flat tires. You bought it to drive it! In the same way, when Christ saves us, He doesn’t want to leave us in a broken condition.
In our study of 1 Corinthians 5, we tackle one of the most difficult questions for the modern church: How do we handle sin within our own ranks? In a world that prizes "tolerance" above all else, the Bible offers a different path—one that leads to true spiritual health and restoration.

What is the Biblical Definition of Sexual Immorality?
Pastor Jeff breaks down the term used in 1 Corinthians 5. In the Greek, the word is porneia, and it acts as an "umbrella term" for any sexual activity outside the marriage covenant. This includes:
The goal of identifying these isn't to "police the world." As Paul writes, God will judge those on the outside. However, within the church, we are called to a higher standard of purity and health.
- Fornication: Sexual intimacy before marriage.
- Adultery: Intimacy with someone other than your spouse while married.
- Homosexuality: Sexual relationships between members of the same sex.

The Conflict: Modern Tolerance vs. Biblical Accountability
In 2026, the word "tolerance" has changed. It used to mean "putting up with something." Today, it often means an affirmation of every lifestyle, regardless of what Scripture says.
When a church refuses to confront sin, it eventually begins to celebrate it. This isn't compassion; it’s abandonment. If a doctor sees a patient with a life-threatening illness and says nothing to avoid "offending" them, that isn't love—it’s negligence.
"Any church that celebrates the affirmation of a Christian over accountability is gravely wrong." — Pastor Jeff

What is the Purpose of Church Discipline?
Many people fear "church discipline" because they think it's about revenge or punishment. According to 1 Corinthians 5, the goal is actually Redemptive Intervention.
- To Destroy the Sinful Nature: By removing the "protective covering" of the church fellowship, the individual is forced to face the consequences of their choices.
- To Save the Soul: The ultimate hope is that the person, like the Prodigal Son, will "come to their senses" and return to the Father’s house.
- To Protect the Body: Paul warns that "a little leaven leavens the whole lump." Unaddressed sin spreads and toxicities the entire community.
Grace Without Truth is Not Love
We often hear the phrase "All means all" or "Don't judge me." While it’s true that Jesus welcomes everyone exactly where they are, He loves us too much to leave us there.
A healthy church walks the narrow path between the two. We reject the sin because we love the person and want to see them restored to the life of transformation Christ promised.
- Grace without Truth is just permission to keep doing wrong.
- Truth without Grace is just harshness.
